Post 3: Digital Publishing Project

My first two posts can be found here: http://mapcdigitalbryanricke.blogspot.com/

Having given it some thought (and some inspiration from Glen's project idea, as well) I have decided that I would like to create a "film festival" website for local filmmakers to be able to submit their film, watch and comment on other people's work, and potentially to start working together outside of the website. It would be similar to youtube, but would remain completely local and hopefully would foster a film community here in Clemson.

This idea partly stems from the fact that Clemson has no film community. Last year several MAPC students (myself included) got together outside of class to make a short horror movie titled "End it Like Beckham." Everyone had an amazing time, became closer friends, learned a great deal about working on a large project together, and made a worthwhile piece of cinema.

Overall it was a success, so we naturally wanted to celebrate by screening the finished product. We decided to hold a premiere at McKissick theater on campus and desperately tried to get other students involved. I wanted to give other students the chance to have their work seen on the big screen. We posted fliers, asked around (two of our group even made announcements in their ENG 103 sections), and we even bought an ad space on facebook to ask for submissions to the film festival. No one got back to us. We did, however, have a decent turnout for our premiere and still had a great time. I know that there are Clemson students who are also interested in filmmaking, and I would love to get them involved in a real film community.

Apart from the actual subject matter, I am also interested in the idea of a website to showcase local films, because it has the potential to mix a large variety of media, as well as foster a discussion about all the different art forms that would go into the showcased films and how they interact to create a finished film. I am excited about this project and look forward to figuring out all the possibilities with it.

  1. Hi Bryan,

Wow - I love it! Developing a grassroots community for local film makers is a great plan. I read one of the optional books - design for community - and would recommend it for your purposes. Let me know if you'd like to borrow a copy.

    Best regards,
    Glen

  2. Bryan,

Your project idea for a “film festival” website sounds really exciting. Building a film culture at Clemson would be a very worthwhile endeavourer. I believe your website may be a start. Given the time constraints for this project, you may not want to be overly ambitious, but use this project as a launch pad for further development. I can’t wait to see it!!
